Week eight of the NFL's Monday night football schedule features an exciting clash between the teams that finished first and second in the American Football Conference West Division last season respectively - the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Diego Chargers. Just one win split these teams last year, but that was the difference between winning the title and a playoff place, and emptying out lockers for an early vacation.
The Chargers and the Chiefs have pretty much run the show in the AFC West this past decade, and look like being the main contenders again this year. This Monday Night Football crunch tie at Kansas City's fabulous 80,000 capacity Arrowhead Stadium could be the game that once again decides the fortunes of both of these teams, and is a must for all serious NFL fans and sports bettors.
Kansas City topped the AFC West with a 10-6 record - the first time they had finished as champions since 2006, and their fourth AFC West title since the new millennium. Going into the postseason as the AFC 4th seeds, the Chiefs were eliminated in the first round of playoff games by the Baltimore Ravens 30-7.
The San Diego Chargers had to settle for second spot in the AFC West after four straight seasons of topping the group and making the playoffs. Despite finishing with a 9-7 slate that was superior to that of the NFC West champions the Seattle Seahawks, it wasn't enough to give the Chargers their 18th playoff berth.
The Chargers v the Chiefs Monday Night Football game has all of the elements in place to be an absolute classic. The game will be screened live on ESPN - all the action starts at 8:30 PM ET.

The San Diego Chargers will be gunning to regain top spot in the NFC West division this season, and will be looking to take maximum points from their main rivals Kansas City with two wins from their regular season encounters. Last September the Chiefs turned the Chargers over in their opening game of the season 21-14 at the Arrowhead Stadium. Although the Chargers were to bounce back and go on to win two out of their next three games, it would be their only successes in their opening seven encounters, and left them with a less than impressive 2-5 record.
Following a tight 23-20 defeat in their own Qualcomm Stadium against 2010's most impressive team during the regular season, the New England Patriots, Norv Turner's Chargers form was to change dramatically, and they went 7-2 for the rest of the season. They gained revenge for that opening loss to the Chiefs by crushing them 31-0 in the return match at the Qualcomm Stadium. Had the Chargers defeated the Oakland Raiders at home instead of going down 13-28 to the team that finished in third place in the AFC, they would have most likely booked their place in the playoffs.
Can Kansas City retain the AFC West for the first time in their history? The Chiefs have never won back-to-back divisional titles since they were established in 1960, and the 2011 season would seem like a great time to start.
44 year old head Coach Todd Haley has been on something of a roller coaster ride since his arrival in 2009. Haley was offensive coordinator with the Arizona Cardinals from 2007 to 2008 and was credited with turning the Cardinals offense into one of the most lethal in the NFL. His opening season in charge of Kansas City saw them finish bottom of the AFC West with a record of 4-12, yet within the space of just 12 months they had finished top of the group with a winning record of 10-6, a truly remarkable achievement.
Highlights of the Chiefs season included their opening day win over the Chargers, a 31-10 thumping of of the San Francisco 49ers and the 34-14 victory over the Tennessee Titans at the Arrowhead Stadium that booked their place in the playoffs. Low points had to be the 31-0 thrashing handed to them by the Chargers in the Qualcomm Stadium, and of course their 30-7 humiliating elimination from the playoffs in their own stadium by the Baltimore Ravens.
Without any doubt Todd Haley and his Kansas City team believe that they can continue where they left off in 2010, and continue to dominate the AFC West. It will be up to the Chargers to prove otherwise, and will look to do so in what should be a truly riveting give-and-take encounter when these two great teams go head-to-head on Monday, October 31!
